Public record

Real enforcement.
Not theory.

Every state publishes enforcement actions against businesses operating without permits. Here's what happens to people who skip the research.

Cosmetology · Arizona
Establishments operating without a current cosmetology license face mandatory closure plus civil penalties up to $2,500 per violation.
Food Service · California
Operating a food facility without a valid health permit is a misdemeanor punishable by up to $1,000 per day of unpermitted operation.
Contractor · California
CSLB publishes regular enforcement sweeps. Unlicensed contractors face up to $15,000 fines + 6 months jail on a first offense. Repeats are felony.
Childcare · Texas
Operating an unlicensed childcare facility carries fines of $25–$200 per child per day plus immediate court-ordered closure.
Sales Tax · All states
Collecting sales tax without a permit is a criminal offense in every U.S. state. Owners are personally liable — LLC does not shield unpaid trust fund taxes.
Workers' Comp · New York
Employers without workers' comp insurance face penalties of $2,000 every 10 days of non-compliance plus criminal charges starting at misdemeanor.

All penalties cited from agency .gov publications, current May 2026. No specific business named. Penalties vary by jurisdiction and circumstance.

Common questions

Things people actually ask.

What's free vs $49?
Free: opening feasibility, clearance level (BLOCKED / AT RISK / CLEAR PATH), earliest legal open date, and a shareable verify link + landlord one-pager.

$49 Opening Kit: full permit stack with .gov links, filing order, lease addendum, calendar, CO packet, plus entity/tax/insurance/banking sections. No subscription required.
Why only $49?
No lawyers, no overhead. Our research engine does 8–20 hours of cross-jurisdiction research in minutes. Typical small-business attorney consult is $200–400/hour for 1–2 hours of permit research — BondPermit gives you the research to bring to that consult.
Do you file permits or licenses for me?
No. We give you everything to file yourself — forms, documents, addresses, phone numbers, application URLs. We are research, not filing. This is intentional — it keeps your costs low and your control high.
How is this different from LegalZoom or Incfile?
They file your LLC — and stop there. We research everything you need beyond the LLC: industry permits, licenses, tax setup, insurance, banking. You can use both — LegalZoom to file the entity, BondPermit to know what to do next.
How accurate is the report?
Every report is researched at the moment you generate it, pulling from the federal, state, county, and city .gov sources that govern your business — the same public .gov sources used for compliance research. Each line item is sourced. You'll see a confidence indicator (High / Medium / Initial draft) showing how well-documented the research is for your specific jurisdiction.

What we don't do: certify or guarantee. Agencies update fees and rules without notice, so the report reflects what was on the .gov sites as of the time of generation. We ask you to confirm with the issuing authority before you file — that's not a hedge, it's how compliance actually works.

Our Error-Challenge refund: if you find a specific error and can show us the .gov source that proves it, we refund the $49 you paid and send you the corrected report.
What if a permit changes after I get my report?
Regulations change. The report reflects what was true on the day it was generated. Optional Watchdog ($9.99/mo) re-checks your report against live .gov sources and emails what changed — fees, new requirements, renewal deadlines.
Can I get a refund?
Pre-delivery: full refund, any reason. Post-delivery: file an Error Challenge at bondpermit.com/report-error with the specific permit + a .gov source showing the correct value. Confirmed challenges get a full refund + corrected report. Read the full refund policy in our Terms § 28.
What's the difference between BondPermit and the partner add-ons coming later?
BondPermit is research. We tell you what to file, where, how much. Partner add-ons (filing services, EIN, insurance, banking) are licensed third-parties who actually do the work. We never file or broker — partners do. We're transparent: we earn a referral fee on partner conversions, disclosed in the partner intro per FTC rules.
Do I need to wait for the partner network to use BondPermit?
No. The $49 report works today, end-to-end. You can file the permits and licenses in your plan yourself using the .gov links we provide. Partner add-ons are optional time-savers coming Month 2–4 for founders who'd rather pay $199 than spend 4 hours filing themselves.
Is this legal advice?
No. BondPermit is an information service that researches publicly available .gov regulations. We are not a law firm, accounting firm, or licensed insurance broker. The report is a research deliverable — you remain responsible for verifying every requirement directly with the issuing authority.
