Houston Short-Term Rentals Use a Certificate of Registration — Not a Generic “STR Permit”

People search “Houston STR permit” and expect the same vocabulary Airbnb uses. Houston’s own program page uses different words. If you apply under the wrong mental model — or advertise without the City-issued number — you can miss the credential the platforms will be asked to enforce.

What Houston’s page actually calls it

The City of Houston Administration & Regulatory Affairs Short-Term Rentals page describes STR certificates of registration and a City-issued registration number that hosts must provide to listing platforms once registration is complete. That is the authoritative label on the City site as of 2026-09-01 — not “permit” as a generic synonym.

All STR certificates of registration issued on or before December 31, 2026, will have an expiration date of December 31, 2027. … On January 1, 2027, the City will begin notifying platforms to remove STR listings that lack a certificate of registration. Operational details hosts miss

• One-hour application session. The City warns that once you start registration you cannot save and return later, and the system may require you to start over if you do not finish within one hour. Gather documents first.
• Platform display. After registration, Houston requires hosts to provide the City-issued registration number to listing platforms.
• HOT proof. The page instructs applicants to be ready with Hotel Occupancy Tax remittance proof or registration on the HOT remittance platform where applicable — confirm the live checklist on the City site.
• Questions. The City lists [email protected] for STR registration questions (phone also published on the same page).

Why the naming gap matters for search — and for compliance

Platforms say “short-term rental.” Houston’s paperwork says certificate of registration. Searching only “permit” can send you to the wrong checklist or an out-of-state guide. Start from the City page, use the City’s words on your listing, and keep the registration number visible where platforms require it.
